Our doors, the ocean, and the skies are open and awaiting your arrival to our West Coast island oasis that is Sonora Resort. May is known as our low season but it is the perfect time to visit as nature is just awakening from its winter hibernation, and we look forward to welcoming the first of our spring guests very soon. Although we are in our 16th year, each season is more exciting than the last, and 2018 is going to be absolutely stellar here at Sonora.
2018 is my first full season as general manager of Sonora Resort. My history with Sonora started in 2005 as operations manager. I have always loved this wondrous place. Its beautiful, awe-inspiring experiences, and timeless quality keeps luring me back, and others as well. This year, we will also see the return of talented pastry chef Dominic Fortin.
What can you expect for 2018? We start the season off with a number of new initiatives including a special Okanagan-collaborative wine weekend in May called Symphony for the Senses, held May 25 to May 27. It features a Wine Tasting Master Class by Rasoul Salehi of Enotecca Wineries, wines from award-winning Okanagan wineries LaStella and Le Vieux Pin and a spectacular one-evening only menu by Lukas and Dominic. Local musician Diane Froese caps off the sensual dinner with live piano music. Only 30 spots are available with few tickets left. In May and June, guests have the chance to see an abundance of wildlife like no other month of the year. A lovely example are the hundreds of bald eagles that roost in the trees overlooking the Yuculta Rapids. The raging currents of each flood tide churn countless Pacific hake to the surface where these majestic birds can be seen right outside the front of the resort, swooping in, fishing and feeding on these small fish. In addition, the Stellar sea lions are here to grunt their welcome to you – there is a spectacular showing of wildlife viewed from one of the most beautiful areas of the British Columbia Coast.

Our executive chef Lukas Gurtner has also been working diligently on a new Sonora Resort cookbook during the off-season. The cookbook is expected to launch mid-May and is a compilation of recipes from Sonora Resort Relais & Chateâux chefs past and present.
And, most of all, I would like to recognize the immense contribution and dedication of our staff. They have been working tirelessly to prepare Sonora Resort for your impending arrival. Their enthusiasm, incredible talents, and passion for the ultimate guest experience truly translates to the high-level of quality in service our resort is known for. As a seasonal resort, we are fortunate to have so many returning employees return for multiple seasons. We love the smiles and delighted reactions when you see a familiar face. At the same time, we also look forward to introducing you to our new team members at Sonora Resort.
